When God’s Presence Goes Public (Pt. 2) | Resources

Intro

In this section of Exodus, the conflict between Yahweh and Pharaoh moves into full view.

Through the plagues, God publicly demonstrates His supremacy over Egypt, its rulers, and its gods. What appears to be a political conflict is actually a theological confrontation. Pharaoh refuses to humble himself before the Lord, and the plagues progressively expose the impotence of Egypt’s power and the stubbornness of Pharaoh’s heart.

God’s purpose is clear: the world will know that He alone is the Lord.

Quote

“God’s judgments on Egypt were not merely punitive; they were revelatory. Through them the Lord was making Himself known as the one true God.” – Peter Enns

Discussion/Reflection Questions

1. The plagues revealed God’s supremacy over Egypt and its gods. What modern “gods” (things people rely on for security or identity) do you see in our culture today?

2. Pharaoh repeatedly hardened his heart despite clear evidence of God’s power. What are some ways people today resist God even when His truth is clear?

3. Why do you think God chose to display His power so publicly in Egypt? What does this teach us about God’s desire for the world to know Him?

4. In what areas of your life do you find it hardest to submit to God’s authority?

5. How does knowing that God rules over every power and authority shape the way you view the challenges or fears in your life?

Gospel Connection

The plagues reveal that God alone has authority over creation, rulers, and human hearts. Yet even after overwhelming evidence, Pharaoh’s heart remained hardened. The human heart naturally resists God’s rule in the same way. The gospel shows the ultimate confrontation between God and evil when Christ defeats sin, Satan, and death at the cross. Where Pharaoh would not bow, Jesus perfectly obeyed the Father and secured redemption for those who trust Him.

Response

Pray: Ask God to reveal areas where pride or stubbornness keeps you from fully submitting to His authority.

Do: Identify one area of your life where you are resisting God’s leadership and intentionally surrender it to Him this week.
