Family Devotional Guide – June 6
Travis Walker   -

I have an interesting question for you and your family to wrestle with this week. Besides faith in Christ, what are the practical differences between believers and non-believers? How are you and your unsaved friend, family member, or co-worker different? Before you answer the question, please reread Romans 8one more time.

The answer I believe we get from the text is the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Or, God In Us! As Pastor Todd said on Sunday, “The believer’s life is the residence of the Holy Spirit.”

Let’s think about this for a minute. The moment you believed that Christ died for your sins on the cross and rose from the grave three days late, the Holy Spirit moved into your life. That moment the Holy Spirit took residency in you! So, you now have God not only with you but in you for the rest of your life. Not only is God now always with you, but He is literally in you. How do you hear that? How do you respond to that?

This fact means that literally, everything about you is different between yourself and your unbelieving friend, family member, or co-worker. Being that God resides in you, everything you think, say, or do ought to be different than what someone without the Holy Spirit living in them would do. Would you agree?

What you watch on the internet will most likely be different.
What you talk about will most likely be different.
What you want or desire will most likely be different.
Who you aim to please ought to be different.
What you spend your money on might be different.
This list of examples could go on and on and on, wouldn’t you agree?

As a family, couple, or as friends, discuss the questions below.

Family Discussion Questions:

  1. Since being saved, how has God changed you?
  2. In what areas of your life are you sinning less?
  3. Since the Holy Spirit indwells in you, how ought you to live today?
  4. Since the Holy Spirit empowers you to do what God commands, what is God prompting you to do that in your human power would be impossible?
  5. What areas of your life yet reflect the fact that the Holy Spirit indwells in you? What needs to change?

Prayer: Take a moment and confess any sins you know you haven’t appropriately dealt with. Now, thank God for His endless grace and mercy.
