Family Devotional Guide – June 20
As believers in Jesus and followers of Jesus, one thing He asks us to do is to obey all that He commands. In our text this Sunday, we saw this clearly stated. Let’s reread John 14:15. It says, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” To paraphrase this verse, we could say that those who follow Jesus obey His every request. That statement is very true. But, I am willing to admit that I love Jesus, but I struggle to obey all of His commandments. Can you relate?
So, how can Jesus ask us to do something so challenging to do? To answer this question, we have to read the very following sentence. Now, let’s read verse 16 of John 14. It says this, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another helper, to be with you forever.” So, according to our text, how can Jesus ask us to do something so challenging to do? Because He will give us a “helper”!!! What a great reminder for us this week. God asks us to do things that brings Him glory, and then He gives us what we need to accomplish what brings Him glory.
So, here is the good news, you can do what God commands you to do because the Holy Spirit is in you and helps you. You and I, people who love Jesus, can obey what Jesus commands! As difficult as it still is, I am so grateful for this great news. I can obey every one of Jesus’ commands with the help of the Holy Spirit.
As a family, couple, or as friends, discuss the questions below.
