When God’s Presence Goes Public (Pt. 1) | Resources
Intro
When God’s presence confronts Pharaoh, opposition intensifies before deliverance begins. Obedience initially leads to discouragement, confusion, and resistance.
Yet God responds not by retreating, but by reaffirming His covenant and declaring His name. Exodus 5–7 teaches that opposition does not signal failure, but often confirms that God’s redemptive work is underway.
God’s purposes are never in doubt, even when circumstances suggest otherwise.
Quote
“When God begins His work of redemption, opposition is inevitable, but His purposes are never in doubt.” – D.A. Carson
Discussion/Reflection Questions
1. Moses obeys God and speaks to Pharaoh, yet the situation immediately worsens. How does this passage challenge the assumption that obedience will quickly lead to visible success?
2. How does discouragement spread among God’s people in this passage, and how does it undermine trust in God’s promises?
3. Pharaoh resists God’s command and tightens his grip on Israel. What does this reveal about how power responds when God’s authority is publicly challenged?
4. In Exodus 6, God repeatedly declares, “I am the LORD.” Why is the reaffirmation of God’s name so important in a moment of apparent failure?
5. Where might God be calling you to keep trusting and obeying even though the results so far feel disappointing or discouraging?

Gospel Connection
When God’s presence goes public in Exodus, it provokes resistance before it brings rescue.
This pattern reaches its climax in the life of Jesus. When Christ openly declared the kingdom of God, He was met not with universal faith but with rejection, hostility, and ultimately the cross. Yet what appeared to be defeat was the very means by which God accomplished salvation. Just as God reaffirmed His covenant and name in the face of Pharaoh’s resistance, God vindicated His Son through the resurrection.
The same Lord who confronted Pharaoh now reigns through Christ, assuring us that no opposition can stop what God has promised to complete.
Response
Pray: Ask God for endurance when obedience leads to disappointment. Pray for renewed trust in His promises when progress feels delayed.
Do: Continue faithfully in an area where results feel discouraging, choosing obedience rooted in trust rather than outcomes.
