The Wonderful “I Wills” of Exodus 6:1–8

These covenant promises are framed by three-fold declaration, “I am the LORD” (v2, v 7, v8), indicating these promises rest, not on Israel, but on God. This is about his character, not simply their conduct. In that way these promises act as one item – the diamond of God’s covenant character – each promise shining like a different facet of God’s nature and character.

1. “I will bring you out” 6:6 God is the compassionate Deliverer.

2. “I will redeem you” 6:6 God is the mighty Redeemer.

3. “I will take you as my people” 6:7 God is the sovereign Father.

4. “I will be your God” 6:7 God is the personal King.

5. “I will bring you to the land” 6:8 God is the faithful Guide.

6. “I will give it to you” 6:8 God is the generous Provider.

Did God keep his promises? Yes. Every. Single. One. These all have been fulfilled!

1. “I will bring you out” Fulfillment – Exodus 12:41-42, 51 “At the end of 430 years, on that same day, all the LORD’s military divisions went out from the land of Egypt. It was a night of vigil in honor of the LORD, because he would bring them out of the land of Egypt. This same night is in honor of the LORD, a night vigil for all the Israelites throughout their generations.”

“And on that very day the LORD brought the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt.”

2. “I will redeem you” Fulfillment – Exodus 14:13-14, 30 “Thus the LORD saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians.” (See also Deuteronomy 26:8)

3. “I will take you to be my people” Fulfillment – Exodus 19:4-6 “You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now if you will carefully listen to me and keep my covenant, you will be my own possession out of all the peoples…you will be my kingdom of priests and my holy nation.”

4. “I will be your God” Fulfillment – Leviticus 26:11-12 “I will place my residence among you, and I will not reject you. I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people.” (See also Exodus 40:34-35)

5. “I will bring you into the land” Fulfillment – Joshua 3:17 “All Israel crossed over on dry ground … until all the nation finished crossing the Jordan.”

6. “I will give it to you” Fulfillment – Joshua 21:43 “So the LORD gave to Israel all the land that He had sworn to give to their fathers, and they took possession of it and lived in it.”

Joshua 23:14 sums it up well:

“None of the good promises the LORD your God made to you has failed. Everything was fulfilled for you; not one promise has failed.” God kept every promise!

Interestingly and beautifully, when these promises are seen together through the full scope of God’s historical redemptive plan across the ages, they form a gospel-shaped arc:

  • God the compassionate Deliverer draws us.
  • God the mighty Redeemer purchases us.
  • God the sovereign Father adopts us.
  • God the personal King forms us.
  • God the faithful Guide leads us.
  • God the generous Provider brings us home.

No wonder the New Testament says: “Every one of God’s promises is YES in him [Jesus].” (2 Cor. 1:20)
