God’s Presence and Human Reluctance (Pt. 2) | Resources
Intro
Exodus 4 shows how fear can deepen when obedience is delayed.
Moses’ reluctance intensifies, yet God patiently provides reassurance, signs, and support. Still, God’s anger reveals that grace does not eliminate the call to obedience. This chapter teaches that while God is patient with weakness, He remains persistent in His purposes.
His presence empowers obedience, but does not excuse resistance.
Quote
“God is patient with our weakness, but He is persistent with His call, because His purposes are too important to abandon.” – Tim Keller
Discussion/Reflection Questions
1. Moses’ reluctance progresses from self-doubt to outright resistance. What does this progression reveal about how unchecked fear can harden into disobedience?
2. How does focusing on “what ifs” keep us from trusting God’s call and obeying what He has already made clear?
3. God responds to Moses’ objections with signs, assistance in speech, and the support of Aaron. What does this teach us about how God equips those He calls?
4. God is patient with Moses, yet His anger burns when Moses refuses to go (Exod. 4:14). How does this passage help us understand the balance between God’s grace and His expectations for obedience?
5. Where might God be calling you to obey, not when you feel ready, but because He has promised to be present and provide what you need?

Gospel Connection
Exodus 4 reminds us that God’s mission does not depend on flawless obedience but on faithful grace.
Moses resists, delays, and falters, yet God continues to work through him to bring deliverance. This points us to Jesus, the greater Moses, who never resisted the Father’s will but obeyed perfectly, even unto death. Where Moses faltered, Christ remained faithful; where we resist, Christ has already obeyed for us. Through His obedience and sacrifice, Jesus secures forgiveness for our reluctance and power for new obedience.
United to Him, we are sent not in our own strength, but in the confidence that God’s presence goes with us.
Response
Pray: Ask God to reveal where reluctance has turned into resistance in your life. Pray for courage to trust His presence enough to obey.
Do: Take one clear step of obedience this week in an area you have been avoiding, trusting that God will supply what you need.
