Discussion/Reflection Questions

1) What do people mean when they wish for peace on earth? How do they assume this will happen?

2) What kind of peace do you think this world is seeking most?

3) Can people have peace in their life if they don’t know Christ? What is missing if they don’t know Christ?

4) What peace does Christ offer?

5) Are you at peace today? Are you resting in the finished work of Christ today? If not, why not?

Devotional

Have you ever met a famous actor like Keanu Reeves (worth almost $400 million), or Charles III, the King of England? Most of us have not had the chance to meet such people with that kind of power and influence. How would you act if you did? Would you be “starstruck” and stammer over your words? Most of us would have some level of anxiety/fear that would be difficult to contain. Anxiety and fear—the opposite of peace—would reign in your heart. Their bigger-than-life presence would be practically unapproachable.

When Jesus walked the earth, His main titles were prophet, priest, and king; three very big, important, and unapproachable titles and positions. The positions were distinct in the Old Testament, each with specific roles. The prophet spoke for God to the people, the priest offered sacrifices and prayed for the people, and the king ruled over the people as God’s representative. Jesus held all three titles and yet allowed his people to approach him with boldness. How? He assumed humanity, humbling himself to the point of death on a cross, taking the punishment for sin that we deserve (Heb. 4:15; Philippians 2:5-11). Our bold approach to His throne is now in His grace and mercy (Heb. 4:16). His love for us covers it all (John 3:16; Romans 5:8). Fully God and fully man, now just as approachable as someone talking to their friend (John 15:15). The most powerful being ever, with no anxiety and fear in His presence; just peace and love in your soul.

The great Prophet, Priest, King, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, the Light of the World, Alpha and Omega. Also, a man, the Suffering Servant, the Peace Maker, the Prince of Peace. Your friend. Your best friend, Jesus.
