Can you say what Paul said in verse 12? What circumstance has happened to you that “has actually advanced the gospel?”

Are you fearless and confident in sharing the Word? If not, how might you gain such confidence?

Are you at all ashamed of being a follower of Jesus Christ? In what circumstances do you find it hard to be bold about your faith?

Paul’s words in verse 18 are surprising! Why doesn’t Paul seem very concerned about motive when it comes to people proclaiming Christ? What is a current day example of this, and how should we respond?

Paul’s life seemed very focused on making much of Jesus Christ. What things in your life distract you sometimes from making much of Jesus? Does something need to change?

In light of our text/sermon, what would it look like to obey?

Memory Verse

“My eager expectation and hope is that I will not be ashamed about anything, but that now as always, with all courage, Christ will be highly honored in my body, whether by life or by death.” Philippians 1:20

Devotional

These verses in Philippians show Paul’s desire to give his all to proclaim the name of Christ and see the gospel go forward. Even while he was in prison, Paul did not lose heart or get frustrated with God, but he continued to share what Jesus Christ had done. He magnified who God was despite the trials that he was going through. Paul was also encouraged that other people were able to share about Christ with boldness because of his imprisonment. Paul didn’t care what other Christians thought of him; it was more satisfying to him that the gospel was going forward even if it meant that his own name was slandered in the process. Lastly, Paul wanted to live for God’s glory regardless if he lived or died. He trusted that God would be his deliverance, and he leaned on that promise.

Are you willing to pursue the fame of Jesus above all else? That is a difficult pursuit, especially since we want to be successful and accomplish things that bring us honor and prestige. Are you okay if, in the world’s eyes, you are unsuccessful or your reputation gets tarnished, but the gospel spreads because of your obedience to Jesus? We should want that, and I hope that we are all challenged to desire, above all else, the gospel to advance and Jesus to be glorified through our obedience.
