Devotional:

What would you say is more important, receiving your morning latte promptly or clean water available to the people of the world? As silly of a question as this is, this is similar to how the book of Jonah concludes.

The story of Jonah ends abruptly and surprisingly. Rather than ending with a nicely tied bow to conclude the story, it ends with a conversation between God and Jonah discussing what is more critical: 120,000 people’s eternal destination or shade from the temporary heat for Jonah. It seems like such a silly and straightforward conversation and answer, but it teaches us something profound. This short conversation teaches us that humanity is primarily focused on its own comfort rather than what is best for others. Conversely, this story teaches us that God is primarily focused on His mission of saving mankind from their sins rather than one man’s comfort.

You see, too often, you and I worry about our happily ever after rather than God’s mission to see the peoples of the world hear about Jesus, just like Jonah did. Today, can I encourage you to take a few moments to contemplate this? Are you seeing the world more like Jonah saw the world or more like God saw the world?

Discussion Questions:

What in our text this week stands out as interesting, confusing, or challenging?

What does our text this week teach us about missions or God’s heart for the world?

Do you desire to be used by God to see others come to know Christ? If not, what needs to change?

When was the last time you shared the gospel with someone?

Who has God put into your life who needs to hear the gospel? How can you set up a time to share the gospel with them?

In light of what we have studied this week, how should you respond in obedience?
