Devotional:

Have you ever run and hid from anything? What caused you to run and hide? Your answer to that question is probably very similar to why Jonah “rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord” in verse 3 of Jonah chapter 1. The reality is that you and I are more like Jonah than we want to admit. It’s easy to mock Jonah for his actions in Jonah 1, but if put in the same position, you and I might respond similarly. Obeying God can be scary or nerve-racking. He often asks us to do things that aren’t super comfortable or safe. Still, to this day, I feel the desire to run when God prompts me to share my faith with my neighbors or family members. Do you? The beauty of the book of Jonah is that the hero isn’t Jonah; it’s God. We see a reluctant servant and a faithful, powerful God throughout the book. This month as you read the book of Jonah, see a faithful God who uses His children many times despite His children’s fear, anger, or desire for comfort. Today, listen to the voice of God and remember that no matter where He sends you, He will be with you and accomplish what He asks you to do!
