Fall 2018 40 Days of Prayer & Fasting - Week 1

Prayer - Flame of Revival

Tomorrow we begin our 40 Days of Prayer and Fasting at First Family. Each week for the next four weeks, you will receive seven prayer prompts for each day of the week. The prayer prompts for this week are included below.

If you would like to join us for corporate prayer, we have two opportunities: tomorrow night, Oct. 14 from 5-6:00 pm, and on Sunday, Nov. 18 from 5-6:00 pm. We will meet in the worship center. This will be a time of Scripture-fed, Spirit-led, Worship-based prayer. Consider joining our prayer community on Facebook to receive regular encouragement to pray and to pray with others -->

The focus of our prayer is revival. Revival begins in our homes. There is an undeniable connection between the worship of a church on Sunday mornings and the holiness of families expressed throughout the week. We cannot expect to see revival in our church until we see revival happening within our homes. Therefore, the focus of this week's prayer is for the families of First Family.

Fasting Prayer

If possible, set aside one day this week for Fasting Prayer. Fasting Prayer is a prayer of seeking God’s will and a spiritual communion with Him while abstaining from the basic and instinctive human need, eating. This is a desperate prayer to get to God with all our hearts. If you are new to Fasting Prayer, set aside one meal this week and devote that time to prayer. If you are experienced with Fasting Prayer, set aside one day. Through Fasting Prayer, we realize the meaning of Jesus’ teaching: “It is written, ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’ ” (Matthew 4:4).

Specific Focus for Fasting Prayer: Fasting Prayer in the Early Church is first seen in the appointment of its leaders. It is written in Acts 13 that prophets and teachers were worshiping the Lord and fasting. The Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them” (Acts 13:2). The work was a missionary calling to spread the gospel to the Gentiles. The Church leaders at Antioch fasted, prayed, and realized God’s calling for Paul and Barnabas. The Church sent Paul and Barnabas off after the laying on of hands. As we begin the search for a Worship Pastor to lead us at First Family, pray and ask the Lord to sovereignly and specifically lead us to the man and family He is calling even now to this position.

This Week's Scripture: Psalm 8

Psalm 8

To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm of David.

1 O LORD our Lord,
How excellent is thy name in all the earth!
Who hast set thy glory above the heavens.

2 Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength
Because of thine enemies,
That thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.

3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers,
The moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;

4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him?
And the son of man, that thou visitest him?

5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels,
And hast crowned him with glory and honour.

6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands;
Thou hast put all things under his feet:

7 All sheep and oxen,
Yea, and the beasts of the field;

8 The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea,
And whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.

9 O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!

Ephesians 5:31–33 (ESV)

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

Steps to Revival

If all the sleeping folks will wake up,
and the lukewarm folks will fire up.
If the dishonest folks will own up,
and the discouraged folks will cheer up,
If the quarrelsome will make up,
and the gossipers will shut up,
If depressed folks will look up,
and the cowardly will speak up,
Then it may well be that GOD will truly bless us.

Sunday, October 14

Father, in a culture that seems to know so little about covenantal marriage and the way it models Your sacrificial love for believers, please intervene to restore the purity of godly love within our homes (Ephesians 5:31-32).

Monday, October 15

Heavenly Father, please help the young women of First Family “to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored” (Titus 2:4-5).

Tuesday, October 16

Almighty God, please help the men in First Family who may have strayed away from You to be “won without a word by the behavior of their wives”—holy women who walk in godliness and remain in submission to their husbands (1 Peter 3:1-2).

Wednesday, October 17

Glorious Father, please help the older women of my church family to be “reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, so that they may encourage the young women” (Titus 2:3-4).

Thursday, October 18

Almighty God, please anoint and guide parents in the task of teaching their children that obedience in the home is something that pleases You greatly (Colossians 3:20).

Friday, October 19

Heavenly Father, please help husbands demonstrate Your selfless love to their wives and diligently strive to not become embittered toward them (Colossians 3:19).

Saturday, October 20

Father, please help the husbands and wives of my church family to be “harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit: not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead” (1 Peter 3:8-9).

This week's worship song: The Sound That Saved Us All
by Anthony Skinner

All hail the power of Jesus' name
Let angels prostrate fall
Bring forth the royal diadem

And crown Him, crown Him, crown Him Lord of all

I just want to sing Amazing Grace
How sweet the sound that saved us all

Let every kindred tribe
On this terrestrial ball
To Him all majesty ascribe
Crown Him, crown Him, crown Him Lord of all

I just want to sing Amazing Grace
How sweet the sound that saved us all
I just want to sing Amazing Grace
How sweet the sound that saved us all

Oh, with that yonder throng
We at His feet may fall
Join the everlasting song
Crown Him, crown Him, crown Him Lord of all

I just want to sing Amazing Grace
How sweet the sound that saved us all
I just want to sing Amazing Grace
How sweet the sound that saved us all
I just want to sing Amazing Grace
How sweet the sound that saved us all

That saved us all
